SAVANNAH, Ga. () — City and state leaders asked for the public’s input about the future of one of Savannah’s landmarks, the Talmadge Bridge Thursday night.

Georgia Department of Transportation leaders said they wanted to hear what the public thinks about the two options they are considering. One option is to demolish the current bridge and replacing it with a taller one, the other would be taking it down all together and building a tunnel.

Both options were proposed with a replacement that would allow larger cargo ships to be able to dock at the Georgia ports just upriver.

Some residents that spokes to said they worried about the potential environmental impacts.

“The danger to both the historic district and to Hutchinson Island, to Elba Island and to the incredibly vulnerable ecosystem is really extreme and it’s like they just want to move the city out of the way and then they can just have a port,” Savannah resident Anna Habersham Wright said.

Comments about the proposed project will be accepted until Thursday, March 27.

The meeting to discuss plans for the bridge was held at the Coastal Georgia Center on Fahm Street.
