Local Savannah Resident Celebrates Cancer-Free Status Following Advanced Robotic Treatments

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — A patient battling lung cancer is making a swift recovery following two advanced robotic surgeries.

Jamie Coursey, diagnosed at St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital, underwent a comprehensive treatment regimen that included surgery within a two-month timeframe. Currently, he is in the recovery phase and showing positive progress.

News 3 had the opportunity to observe the meticulous steps involved in Coursey’s journey to recovery.

Just weeks ago, Coursey was in the operating room where medical experts at St. Joseph’s/Candler successfully identified and excised a suspicious nodule from his left lung. Today, he is comfortably at home, celebrating his cancer-free status and feeling a sense of relief:

Thanks to the Monarch procedure, Dr. Douglas Mullins was able to mark this small nodule.

Days later, that mark lit up bright green for Dr. Marc Bailey, who used the latest model of the DaVinci robot to remove it all.

Mullins told News 3 the procedure was much less invasive using this technology. In fact, Coursey walked away with five small incisions rather than what would’ve been a cut from his breastbone to his backbone if doctors were using older technology. Mullins said this technology has opened a new chapter in cancer care.

“I think a lot of people are afraid of what they’re going to find out by peeking under the hood, but what people need to know is that when we find something that small, we now have a way of dealing with it that leaves a very small footprint on your life,” Mullins said.

Coursey said he was not concerned about the procedure, but that the journey was difficult.

“I was not nervous at all because I felt like I was being taken care of by my family, and I had all the confidence that this is going to be good and they’re going to do whatever it takes,” he said. “There was a lot of stuff going through my mind. My wife is my biggest supporter, and she was there for me with all of this. But in the back of my mind, I’m like, how is this affecting her? You know, I showed up thinking about it a little bit, but I didn’t want her to worry.”

But now Coursey is looking forward to returning to work and serving others through the church they attend, also spreading awareness about lung cancer screenings and treatment.

“That’s what me and my wife do any way we can help. And if something happens to you that you could prevent it from happening to somebody else and sharing it.”

Coursey says he doesn’t have further treatment at this point, except for scans for the next two years, every six months. He asks anyone who’s considering getting screened to make an appointment as soon as they can.
