Local Star Kylan Boswell Gears Up for Last Home Game with Illinois Illini

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – The atmosphere at State Farm Center has been particularly vibrant over the past two seasons, primarily due to one significant factor.

Each time Illinois’ men’s basketball team plays at home, the announcement rings out: “At guard… from Champaign,” declared by Tim Sinclair, the voice familiar to fans of the Bulls, Blackhawks, and Illini. “Number four… Kylan… Boswell.”

For Boswell, hearing his name and hometown called before the game offers a unique reassurance. “It always gives me a sense of calm,” Boswell shared, noting how it helps dispel any pre-game jitters.

After spending two years at Arizona to kick off his college basketball journey, Boswell returned to Champaign. This Tuesday, he will be recognized during Illinois basketball’s senior night, marking the last home game of the season.

Playing at a high collegiate level in his hometown is an opportunity Boswell, affectionately known as ‘Bam’, cherishes deeply, aware that such chances are rare for most athletes.

“I kind of had a feeling I wanted to come back here,” Boswell said of entering the transfer portal after his sophomore year. “It was an easy decision to come back home.”

Boswell has impacted Illinois basketball in a wide variety of ways. His scoring, 736 points and counting in an Illinois uniform, has absolutely been valuable. His passing and rebounding have helped, too. However, it’s an intangible contribution which might be the largest of the bunch: Leadership.

“He’s a great, great competitor,” Illinois head coach Brad Underwood said. “He cares about winning at a really high level. And I think that his impact on us has been just that.”

Boswell’s leadership is proven in his willingness, and high level ability, to mentor two freshman point guards in his two seasons at Illinois. Kasparas Jakucionis was selected in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft after playing and practicing alongside Boswell for just one year, and all signs point towards Keaton Wagler taking a similar path.

“The young guys I’ve had under my wing since I’ve gotten here, trying to help them, mold them into whoever the best version of themselves can be,” Boswell said.

Underwood calls Boswell ‘a hometown hero’ and says it worked out well for Boswell to go elsewhere and return to Central Illinois with the maturity and experience level the Illini needed from him.

“He wears the orange and blue with tremendous pride,” Underwood said. “I think it worked out great… We thrust so much on him, and expected so much, at a very young age. And he has handled it like a champion.”

Boswell, like Terrence Shannon Jr. and others, is proof that college basketball players can be loved and appreciated even if they don’t spend their whole career at one place.

“Whether you come here as a freshman – your time here has been impacted,” Underwood said. “I value what [players] have done here whether they stay or not….”
