SAVOY, Ill. (WCIA) — Medical emergencies can happen anywhere, anytime and any place. One family learned that a few weeks ago, and now, three kids are being honored for their efforts in helping to rescue their grandmother in Savoy.

Elaine Wrinkle had a stroke in her living room last month. Thankfully, her grandkids and their friend were inside at the time and able to call 911. It’s why all three are Tuesday night’s Everyday Heroes.

“Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, because if they hadn’t done what they did and stood up and be brave like that then I wouldn’t be here,” Wrinkle said.

The three kids accepted an award for their heroism at the Savoy Fire Department, and then got an all access tour.

“I drove the ambulance that day, the medics were in the back and we got the patient there with enough time to get help,” Zach Kleiss said.

Kliess with Savoy Fire was one of the firefighters responding that July 10 afternoon.

“That takes a lot of bravery to do that, to call an adult for help like that, so I would say they were very brave and very smart,” Kleiss said.

And their actions on that day, all leading to this: Getting to train like real firefighters, putting out a stovetop fire and saving a stuffed animal.

All in a days work for these three newly honored heroes who Elaine Wrinkle won’t soon forget.

“Just like when we were looking at the ambulance that was the ambulance I rode in, I immediately got emotional because I’m thinking I could’ve not made it to the hospital,” Wrinkle said. “I could have not made it there if they didn’t do what they did to save me.”

Seth Vermillion along with Lyrell and Lyarron Jr. Emers were formally honored two weeks ago at the Savoy Village Board Meeting where they were presented lifesaving awards for saving Elaine.
