LUTZ, Fla. (BLOOM) – Los Chapos Tacos, a fan-favorite for authentic Mexican street food in Tampa, has opened a new location in Lutz.
The restaurant, located at 24799 State Road 54 W, is the latest addition for the fast-growing taco brand. Known for its five-star birria tacos and signature torta ahogada, a hearty “drowned sandwich” served with spicy dipping sauce, Los Chapos Tacos has developed a devoted following through its existing locations in Ybor City, Brandon and from a food truck stationed just minutes away in Lutz.
Owner Christopher Rodriguez launched Los Chapos Tacos as a side venture, inspired by a trip to Mexico City with his wife. The visit not only influenced the menu but led to a partnership with Chef Jonathan Reyes, who now helps oversee the kitchen.
“We traveled to a bunch of taquerías to bring back inspiration,” Rodriguez told Fox 13 in a 2024 interview. “Not only did we bring back inspiration, but we brought back an amazing chef.”
The result is a bold, flavor-packed menu that includes:
- Achiote Fried Chicken Tacos with Oaxaca cheese, jicama slaw, salsa macha, crema and avocado
- Chorizo Mexicano Tacos, topped with street corn, tomatillo pico, Oaxaca cheese and crushed Takis
- Birria Tacos, made with slow-stewed beef and melted mozzarella, served with beef broth for dipping
Other standouts include the guacamole de chicharrón, hand-smashed guac topped with grilled pork belly, and charred elotes dressed with chipotle aioli, cotija, lime and tajín.
House-made agua frescas in flavors like pineapple, hibiscus and passion fruit offer a refreshing contrast to the rich, spicy dishes. For dessert, diners can choose from classic churros, flan or tres leches cake.
With its latest opening, Los Chapos Tacos continues to establish itself as one of the premier taco spots in the Tampa Bay area. The Lutz location offers both loyal customers and new diners a chance to experience authentic Mexican street food just north of Tampa.
