The Associated Press confirmed O’Hara’s at the age of 71, following a short illness. She played Culkin’s somewhat forgetful mom in the holiday favorites “Home Alone” and “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York”.
Culkin, 45, took to Instagram with a heartfelt message:
Mama.
I thought we had time.I wanted more.
I wanted to sit in a chair next to you.
I heard you.
But I had so much more to say.I love you.
I’ll see you later.
Culkin and O’Hara stayed in touch through the years and when he was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023, she was one of the people who gave some words at the ceremony.
O’Hara led a long and illustrious career, starting in television in the mid 1970s. The actress was nominated for multiple Primetime Emmy Awards through the decades, winning two. Her final nomination was last year, for her recurring role in HBO’s “The Last of Us.”
She gained newfound acclaim in the 2020s as part of the popular Canadian sitcom “Schitt’s Creek,” for which she won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award.
O’Hara is survived by husband Bo Welch, in addition to their sons, Matthew and Luke.
