In Decatur, Illinois, the Macon County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents about two emerging phone scams that have recently been reported. Alarmingly, one of these scams involves impersonating a legitimate Sheriff’s Lieutenant, adding a deceptive layer of credibility to the fraud.

According to Lieutenant Jamie Belcher—who is indeed a real officer—a series of concerned citizens reached out to the Sheriff’s Office on Thursday. They reported receiving phone calls from individuals falsely claiming to be officials from Macon County, demanding money under the guise of fines or services.
