Mahomet Police Urge Residents to Prioritize Safety in Electric Scooter Usage: Tips and Guidelines Released

MAHOMET, Ill. — In an effort to enhance road safety, Mahomet village officials in Champaign County are drawing attention to the responsible use of unconventional vehicles.

The Mahomet Police Department took to social media on Friday to remind residents about the proper regulations for operating electric scooters. According to the police, adherence to these guidelines has been less than ideal.

Mahomet Police Chief Dave Smysor emphasized the importance of educating those aged 18 and under about the safe and legal use of electric scooters. The focus is on preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of both the riders and other road users before any incidents occur.

“This has been an ongoing discussion within the village for some time,” Chief Smysor stated.

He’s talking about the use of electric scooters in Mahomet — especially by people under 18.

“We’ve just seen an uptick in the number of scooters that have been around town. And this is something that I think a lot of communities have been dealing with,” Smysor said.

Smysor said that’s why the department put up a post online laying out where you can and can’t use them. People 18 and older can operate the scooters on public roadways, but only 35 miles an hour, whereas people under 18 can’t operate them on these roadways at all.

The chief said there are specific spots where teens under 18 are on the road.

“The schools are where we’re seeing a lot of them, especially in the morning, in the evening, and schools are letting out in the middle of town. It’s just quite congested. We all know it. There’s a lot of vehicle traffic there,” Smysor said.

WCIA spoke with three people who live on the road connecting Mahomet Junior and Senior High School. They all said — like Smysor — they’ve seen people not following the rules. One mother said she thinks it’s a big safety hazard — especially seeing some kids riding with headphones in.

“They’re fast, they’re small. And, there’s really no way, unlike some other things that share the roadway, there’s no way to really signal how you are, how you’re moving on one of them,” said Smysor.

As for alternative methods of transportation, Smysor said not to look too far back.

“Biking and walking have been around for a really long time, and they work pretty well,” Smysor said.
