(The Hill) – A recent poll indicates that nearly two-thirds of Americans are not in favor of President Trump’s proposal to construct a ballroom in the White House.

The survey, conducted by Yahoo/YouGov, reveals that 61 percent of participants oppose the ballroom addition, while only 25 percent are in favor of it.

The plan involves demolishing the East Wing of the White House to make way for the expansive ballroom envisioned by President Trump, a move that has sparked significant backlash. The demolition of the East Wing was finalized last week, with excavators beginning the process earlier in the week.

Previously, the East Wing housed the office of First Lady Melania Trump, along with the offices of the White House social secretary and calligrapher, a movie theater, and the presidential bunker.

According to the same Yahoo/YouGov poll, 26 percent of respondents support the East Wing’s demolition to accommodate the ballroom, while 57 percent oppose it, and 11 percent remain undecided.

Many allies of the president, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) have defended Trump’s demolition of the East Wing

“Just because President Trump has an idea, the Democrat Party’s visceral reaction is just to say no,” Scalise said during a press conference last week.

Scalise said the White House has a history of being “renovated over and over again” and “there wouldn’t be an Oval Office if there weren’t renovations by previous presidents.”

The Yahoo/YouGov poll took place from Oct. 23 and 27, featuring 1,770 people and about 3.1 percentage points as its margin of error.
