(NewsNation) – Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s mother has shared new details of her son’s death earlier this summer in Costa Rica.

Pamela Warner told Robin Roberts of “Good Morning America” on Tuesday that her son was in Costa Rica because of his daughter’s education.

“His wife and daughter had been in Costa Rica three weeks prior,” Pamela Warner said. “She is homeschooled, and this was part of an immersion program.”

The mother of “The Cosby Show” star said he had arrived during the final week, which was “for the husbands to come” and that it was supposed to be “the fun part” of the trip.

“She was not in the water. He was with another gentleman,” she said.

Warner drowned July 20 in Costa Rica after getting caught in a current at Playa Cocles in Limon on the country’s Caribbean coast, Costa Rican authorities confirmed at the time. He was 54.

Pamela Warner said when she discovered her son had tragically passed away, her neighbors heard her scream.

“It was from the bottom of my soul. And what came up and what came out was huge; it was an indescribable pain that resonated throughout my body,” she told Roberts.

Pamela Warner: It ‘was his time’

While she is mourning her son, she said that spiritually, it “was his time.”

“This is what I believe and what I feel.”

Pamela Warner said his daughter is still processing the loss of her dad.

“Children process differently. She watched them try to resuscitate him, so she saw that, and I know that’s awfully, awfully traumatic,” Pamela said of the 8-year-old. “She loved her father dearly. She adored papa — he was papa.”
