BEAUFORT, S.C. () — A suspect in the 2021 shooting death of an 18-year-old Bluffton student athlete appeared in court Thursday.

DJ Fields was shot and killed, and two other teens were injured, when suspects opened fire on the car they were driving along Bluffton Parkway.

One man involved in Fields death, Jayden Void, pleaded guilty to assault by mob resulting in death, second degree serious bodily injury and third-degree bodily injury.

Fields father, Dwon Fields asked the judge to give Jayden the maximum penalty allowed while giving his testimony.

Jayden’s attorney asked for his sentenced to be suspended and for him to not spend more time in jail. The now 23-year-old also told the judge he is “deeply sorry” for what happened.

Two men have since been found guilty of Fields’ murder: Ty Chaneyfield, who received a life sentence, and Jimmie Green, who was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Prosecutors have said Fields and his friends were not the people Green and Chaneyfield were targeting, making it an apparent case of mistaken identity.

Solicitor Duffie Stone said in 2022 that Jayden and Shayniah Void allegedly informed Green that someone he was looking for, an “opp,” or opposition, that he wanted revenge on for shooting up his house, was in the area. Green was reportedly looking for someone else, not Fields.

Jayden was facing assault and battery by mob charges in connection to Fields death. His sister shares the same charges.

Shayniah is still in jail, awaiting court.
