WASHINGTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A homemade explosive device allegedly belonging to a Jonesborough man was found during the booking process at the Washington County Detention Center.

On Jan. 11, James Thomas Clay, 29, was arrested for various charges by the Johnson City Police Department, according to a release from the Washington County, Tennessee Sheriff’s Office (WCSO).

While being booked into the Washington County Detention Center, deputies found a small, homemade device “believed to be an Improvised Explosive Device (IED)” in Clay’s belongings, the sheriff’s office reported.

The device was taken for mitigation by the Johnson City Police Department’s Bomb Squad.

The explosive was removed and no officers were harmed in the incident, the WCSO stated.

As of Tuesday, Clay is being held on a $66,000 bond. He is set to appear in court on Jan. 27.
