CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — A Champaign County man is facing kidnapping and sexual abuse charges after allegedly taking a 12-year-old family member out of school, claiming that he planned to take them to the doctor, but instead bringing them to a rural area.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office said Esteban Jesus-Sebastian picked up his family member from school at 1:15 p.m. on Thursday and brought them to rural Mahomet.

This caused the child to become frightened, the sheriff’s office said. The child asked to be taken home. When Jesus-Sebastian refused, the child asked to be let out of the car. And when he refused again, the child attempted to escape from the vehicle when it stopped. That’s when the child said Jesus-Sebastian inappropriately touched them.

Eventually, the child was able to escape from the car and hid in the cornfield. The sheriff’s office said Jesus-Sebastian drove back and forth on the road, calling for the child.

The child began running to homes in the area for help. Police arrived after the child alerted the neighbors.

When police found Jesus-Sebastian, he told them that he was alone in the vehicle. And, he allegedly told them that he had stopped to get corn on his way to work. But, officers found two open cans of beer in his vehicle and said that he smelled like alcohol. Jesus-Sebastian also showed signs of impairment during field sobriety tests.

Jesus-Sebastian is now facing charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated sexual abuse and driving under the influence of alcohol.
