MONTICELLO, Ill. (WCIA) — A Monticello man is under arrest after the Piatt County Sheriff’s Office said he hit a woman with his car and fled the scene in November.
The Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook that it obtained an arrest warrant for Dustin Wiegel, 28, in connection to that case on Tuesday. On Nov. 10, deputies responded to County Roads 1900 North and 1300 East for reports that a woman was hit by a vehicle.
The woman, identified as 39-year-old Havilah Giannetta, was found in critical condition and later died at Carle Hospital in Urbana.
The Sheriff’s Office said that after obtaining an arrest warrant for Wiegel, he was taken into custody later in the day and was booked into the Piatt County Jail.
The arrest warrant charged Wiegel with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, a Class 1 felony. He remains in custody pending a detention hearing.
The investigation into the deadly hit-and-run was conducted by the Piatt County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, Champaign County Coroner’s Office and the Piatt County State’s Attorney’s Office. Even though an arrest has been made in the case, the investigation is ongoing.
