LEBANON, Va. (WJHL) — A man convicted of second-degree murder in a fatal Lebanon shooting has been sentenced.

According to Russell County Commonwealth’s Attorney Zack Stoots, Dennis Dee Gilbert was sentenced on Thursday to serve a total of 18 years on felony convictions and another year on a misdemeanor charge.

Gilbert, 71, was convicted by a jury in October 2024 of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Zachary Cody Boyd. Gilbert shot Boyd in the parking lot of the Lebanon Walmart in March 2024.

Gilbert was also found guilty of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and shooting in a public location. He later pleaded guilty to brandishing a firearm as well.

He also received a suspended sentence of 20 years and will spend five years on supervised probation if he is released from incarceration, a news release from Stoots’ office states.

Stoots claimed that Gilbert should not be allowed back on the streets where he could commit further crimes and claimed he was a danger to public safety.

“I hope the end of this court process will provide closure and begin the healing process for this wonderful family that didn’t deserve such a senseless act of violence to take the life of Zachary Boyd,” Stoots said in the release.
