Manatee County investing $24 million to upgrade parks

BRADENTON, Fla. (SNN) — Manatee County wants neighbors to enjoy the Florida sun — and officials are investing millions of dollars to make that happen.

For years, the county has added ball fields, trails, and playgrounds. But with the population booming, leaders say it’s time for the biggest investment yet. More than $24 million has been set aside over the next five years to bring new life to the park system.

“We are lucky enough to have dedicated resource fees — through our impact fees and millage — that allow us to reinvest into the community,” said Molly White, Sports & Leisure Services Director. “That means we can promote physical activity, increase well-being, and preserve green space.”

One example is Tom Bennett Park, a 200-acre site that has recently added new features, including a splash pad and a communication board to make the park more accessible.

“Tom Bennett is a 200-acre oasis — and it’s a park that has seen new amenities come on scene, from the splash pad that’s here to the communication board that increases abilities for all children and adults,” White said.

It’s not just about improvements to existing parks. Officials say four brand-new parks are in the design phase, spanning from West Bradenton to Lakewood Ranch.

Multiple projects are already underway, and leaders expect most of the work to be finished within the next two years.
