Hundreds of The Vault residents displaced after Friday move-out deadline

STATESBORO, Ga. () — Hundreds of people were displaced Friday, after an apartment complex was declared too dangerous for inhabitants.

“It would have been different if they at least gave us a month but we kind of just found out that we’d have to up and move,” said Jalen Goss, a student living at The Vault apartments.

Residents were told to leave Monday by a letter from The Vault attached to their door, after a building inspection found every building there, including the front office, to be too dangerous to be in.

The contractor that inspected cited rotting wood and exposed foundations. Goss told he’s having to give up his dog to stay at a new place – one of several sacrifices being made by tenants.

“My friend made a tent for me in her apartment to just live there for the next month before I can go home after classes because I have nowhere else to go,” said Melina Tejada. “It’d be either that or my car.”

People there said they’re either relying on the kindness of others, or they’re trying to find a new lease elsewhere.

They said what makes it worse is they don’t have their deposits or a refund of April’s rent.

“Now I’m kind of stuck figuring out what to do now,” said Kayla White, a resident. “It’s very hard to pick up and move for me in such a short time, especially with my disability and everything.”

Kayla White said she’s stayed at The Vault through changing ownership and deteriorating conditions because her apartment accommodates her wheelchair. She said now she’s being denied at some places because she’s already graduated and is no longer a student.

“I worry about not having enough space for my wheelchair for me to get around,” said White. “I’m worried about me not being able to reach things, not being able to get around the complex if I need to get somewhere.”

“If I don’t have that I’m kind of just a person stuck in a shoe box who can’t really get around and it’s unfair,” she said.

In their notice to The Vault of its poor condition, the City of Statesboro gave the owners until Monday to come up with a plan for improving conditions there. City officials said so far all they’ve heard is radio silence. They said they’ll decide what steps to take next after Monday.

City officials told News 3, they don’t have any policies to allow them to inspect residential buildings after they are built.

The community has come out with resources for those without any other option, announced on the Bulloch County EMA Facebook page.

Student resources:

According to GSU officials: “The Dean of Students Office is available to assist with Georgia Southern students who may be impacted by housing issues at the Vault. The Dean of Students Office can also assist students with faculty notifications and other support resources. Georgia Southern’s University Housing Office is available to work with students who are looking for a place to live on campus for the remainder of the semester. Any student not wishing to live in on-campus housing, should still contact the Dean of Students Office for assistance.”

Apartments available: Copper Beech and Cambridge have vacancies. They said they will allow immediate move in as soon as they complete their screenings.

Rental assistance:

The Union Mission is prepared to help displaced families with income to find housing and possibly provide rent assistance for the first few months. Interested families must apply in person at their Statesboro office (515 Denmark Street, Suite 1000) and provide proof of displacement and proof of income. Through their Rapid Rehousing Program, they will pay your deposit and half of your first three months’ rent. You must bring the letter from The Vault and meet their financial requirements. For more questions call them at 912-238-2777 extension 1801 or 1800.

Shelter availability:

Open Hearts Community Mission currently has one family room available, along with ten available beds for women and seven available beds for men. They do not accommodate couples. Interested families will need to call 912-623-2528. They prefer a phone call to appearing in person. The intake process takes about 30 minutes: a required background check via the Statesboro PD takes only about two minutes, and the application form is only one page.

Medical, mental healthcare:

Statesboro Pediatrics and Family Healthcare Center, 1570 Brampton Avenue, Statesboro, GA is offering free medical and mental health care to any residents of the Vault for the month of April. Call 912-764-9196 to make an appointment. You will need to tell them you are a resident of The Vault and bring the letter to vacate from The Vault and proof that you are a resident of The Vault.

Food and other resources:

Christian Social Ministries is available to provide resources including food. John Long, Executive Director can be reached at 912-512-0107.

The Statesboro Food Bank can provide meal bags for anyone facing economic stress over this transition. They try to “batch” delivery to save volunteer time and gas but respond as quickly as possible when needed even if a repeat visit to the same complex. If you need food call Sheila Leach, Executive Director at 912-707-2787.

Esther’s Place is offering showers and laundry assistance.

Bulloch VOAD and Bulloch Strong are accepting monetary contributions to assist agencies providing direct assistance to impacted individuals at The Vault. To mail checks, make payable to Bulloch Strong, C/O Pittman Park Church, 1102 Fair Road, Statesboro, Ga. 30458. To donate online, visit .
