VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A significant wildfire, covering around 600 acres, is currently raging in the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Volusia County. Authorities have issued advisories to nearby communities regarding the presence of smoke and ash in the area.
Although the fire is extensive, Volusia County officials have reassured the public that no buildings are in danger. Firefighters from the county are closely monitoring the situation and are ready to support state and federal agencies if called upon.
According to a statement shared by the local fire union on social media, the fire is believed to have been started by a lightning strike over the weekend.
On Monday afternoon, rain began to fall in the region, which helped reduce the amount of visible smoke. Despite this, the storms brought more thunder and lightning, the same conditions suspected of sparking the initial fire.
Earlier that same day, smoke was visible from International Speedway Boulevard in DeLand just before 8 a.m. Many residents found their cars covered in ash, including a News 6 viewer who shared images of her vehicle, heavily dusted with ash, parked near the Volusia and Lake County border.
Multiple agencies, including the Florida Forest Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, are actively working to contain the fire. Volusia County Fire Rescue is monitoring the situation and is prepared to provide support if requested.
Volusia County is asking residents not to call 911 or emergency dispatch centers unless they see active flames or an immediate threat to life or property, noting that smoke may remain visible as crews continue suppression efforts.
