In Mattoon, Illinois, the spotlight is on Tristan Porter, a senior wrestler at Mattoon High School who is poised to etch his name in the school’s history books. With a career boasting nearly 150 wins, Porter is a two-time state qualifier and a three-time Apollo Conference champion. Now, he aims to become the first state champion wrestler Mattoon has ever produced.
Porter’s athletic journey extends beyond the wrestling mat. His diverse involvement includes stints in football, track and field, and cross country, showcasing his versatility and dedication to sports.
Despite the high stakes and personal ambitions, Porter remains deeply connected to the enjoyment of the sport. Reflecting on his final season, he expressed, “I’m more motivated this year than I’ve ever been, and this is the most fun I’ve had wrestling in a long, long time. It’s been a pretty good season, a lot of ups and downs, but all the hard work I’m putting in I think is finally paying off.”
As Porter continues his quest for greatness, he embodies the spirit of perseverance and passion, serving as an inspiration to his peers and the community of Mattoon.

“I think he takes it day by day,” Mattoon head wrestling coach Brett Porter said. “It’s an evolution and the growth since he was a state qualifier as a freshman and then a return as a junior, just to come in here with that mindset of setting that goal as high as he has and working towards it, I hope he achieves it.”
Tristan is now eligible for a $1,500 cash prize we’ll give away to one boy and one girl at the end of the school year.
