SALT LAKE CITY (KTVX) — As the chill of winter sets in, dropping temperatures often lead to a spike in energy expenses.

You may find yourself pondering ways to minimize these costs. While there are strategies to achieve that, some widely suggested tips might not be as effective as assumed.

Does turning the heat on and off actually save you money?

Regularly turning your heating system on and off could potentially save some money. However, this practice might bring unintended consequences, such as damage to your home or discomfort for both you and your pets. For instance, switching off the heat entirely risks freezing and bursting your pipes.

How should your ceiling fan rotate during the winter months?

In a house without heat, the temperature can drop to uncomfortably cold levels, which can be unpleasant despite wearing warm clothing or bundling up in blankets. While some may enjoy a cooler environment for sleeping, excessively low temperatures might disrupt sleep quality. Additionally, pets are likely to feel uncomfortable in a chilly home, according to experts.

Instead of turning your heat off completely, it is better to lower the temperature on the thermostat. According to the Utah Public Service Commission, you can save a significant amount of money by changing the temperature when you’re not at home or when you’re asleep.

Experts recommend a difference of eight degrees at night or when you’re not home

Best practices for saving money on heating bills

Set your thermostat to be a few degrees lower than what you usually would prefer, around 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. That can help you save both money and energy.

If you set the thermostat eight degrees lower while you are asleep or away, for at least 8 hours a day, you can save 10% on your heating costs, according to Utah Energy Hub. A programmable or smart thermostat can make changing the temperature automatic.

Some may believe that a furnace works harder to heat the house back up after it’s been set to a lower temperature, but once it’s colder, it loses heat more slowly. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the longer your house remains at a lower temperature in winter, the more energy you save, because less energy is lost compared to when you have it at a higher temperature.

If it’s sunny outside, experts recommend opening the blinds so the sun can add heat to your home and reduce the need for your heater to work so hard.

If you don’t use portions of your home, don’t heat them. Close or partially close the air vents to rooms you don’t spend time in, and this can reduce the amount of energy you’re using because you’re only heating the occupied parts of your home.

Check for drafts around windows and doors. Good seals keep air inside the home and the cold out, so experts suggest checking the caulk around windows and adding trim to your doors if there is a draft. At night, or if it’s cloudy, close blinds and curtains to provide additional insulation for windows.
