(NEXSTAR) – It’s been confirmed: If the government shutdown extends into the weekend, November’s SNAP benefits will not be distributed.

While certain states are hustling to provide alternative food aid, others are cautioning Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participants to prepare for potentially empty accounts—unless they have been exceptionally frugal with their planning.

Previously known as the Food Stamp Program, SNAP is designed to assist individuals and families with low or no income, as well as those with disabilities, in purchasing groceries. Although the funds are federally sourced, each state is responsible for managing the program.
