AUGUSTA, Ga. – Mayor Garnett Johnson of Augusta has officially declared his candidacy for re-election, seeking another four-year term to continue his leadership in the city.

The announcement came on a Friday evening, with Mayor Johnson expressing his commitment to serving the community and earning their trust once more. “I am asking for the chance to earn your vote again, a privilege I do not take lightly,” he stated. “Augusta is the most beautiful city on the planet, and though I might be biased, having been born and raised here, I am dedicated to making it even better for its residents and those who visit.”

Mayor Johnson highlighted his achievements, emphasizing his dedication to fiscal responsibility, particularly his stance against new taxes. He also noted the city’s successful recovery and restoration efforts following the devastation of Hurricane Ali. Furthermore, Johnson pointed to the charter review process as a significant step towards enhancing governmental efficiency, a discussion that has been ongoing since 1996 and is finally making progress.

Augusta resident Betty Hanks praised the mayor’s hands-on approach during challenging times. “One of the most significant moments was our recovery from Hurricane Helene,” she recalled. “He was proactive, organizing meetings across town, listening to the community’s concerns, and addressing them effectively.”

As the election approaches, Mayor Johnson will face competition from Steven Kendrick, who announced his candidacy back in July 2025, setting the stage for a competitive race.
