McDonald's teases 'new' chicken item, return of Snack Wraps in 2025

(NEXSTAR) — The wait is nearly over for Snack Wrap lovers. After months of teasing, McDonald’s announced Tuesday that its beloved menu offering will once again return to its menus.

In April, McDonald’s posted a relatively cryptic post to X announcing the beloved Snack Wraps would return on the 14th. However, the company didn’t reveal which month the fan-favorite item would return, just that it would be sometime this year.

Then on Tuesday, McDonald’s put all the speculation to bed, writing simply “snack wrap 07.10.2025.”

Now you may be wondering what happened to the cryptic post in April. In a follow up post on X, McDonald’s — or presumably, the employee tasked with managing their social account — wrote, “I know I posted 0x.14.2025 a few weeks ago but i wanted to see if they could come back even sooner. so i asked the boss and he said OKAY LETS DO IT?!?!!”

The post also credited Snack Wrap fanatics with sparking the return of the menu item thanks to their social media comments, petitions, and drive-thru questions.

“Thanks to you, the Snack Wrap will be back,” Tuesday’s post read.

Popeyes may also have played a part.

On Monday, Popeyes debuted three varieties of its new Chicken Wraps, which are currently available at participating Popeyes locations nationwide. But before Monday’s announcement, the chain made an apparent dig at McDonald’s on Friday.

In an X post, the people behind the Popeyes account appeared to troll McDonald’s for only providing a vague timeframe for the return of their wraps. They shared the subtle April post from McDonald’s with the caption “chicken wraps 0x.02.2025.”

Then on Monday, McDonald’s simply told fans to “stay tuned” to the McDonald’s social media channels for more information.

It’s unclear whether Popeyes forced the hand withholding Snack Wraps from McDonald’s menus, but it’s safe to say you need not wait much longer to get your hands on the wraps.

It’s been several years since Snack Wraps were available in the U.S. The wraps — variations of which can still be found internationally — contained chicken, lettuce, and cheese all wrapped in a warm tortilla. They launched in 2006 and were later followed by an Angus offering. The latter was dropped in 2013 as McDonald’s made menu changes, while the original Snack Wrap was removed in 2016 over complaints that it took too long to make.

Some individual franchises held onto the Snack Wraps, but in 2020, the offerings were removed from all U.S. McDonald’s restaurants. In the years since, there have been petitions, social media campaigns, and even failed attempts to use celebrity endorsements of the Snack Wraps as leverage to bring them back.

McDonald’s did tease a new iteration of the Snack Wraps in 2023, announcing that it would expand its chicken meals to meet consumers’ demands. That included expanding the McCrispy “to nearly all markets across the world by the end of 2025 and expand McCrispy into wraps and tenders.”

In December, Joe Erlinger, U.S. president for McDonald’s, confirmed that Snack Wraps would return in 2025, saying the discontinued items have somewhat of a “cult-following.”

Then in February, McDonald’s president and CEO Chris Kempczinski acknowledged the “incredible energy for the return of Snack Wraps in the U.S.” but didn’t share much else.

In the meantime, McDonald’s has rolled out McCrispy Strips — breaded tenders made with all-white-meat chicken — to on menus nationwide.

Like the Snack Wraps, international McDonald’s restaurants already have chicken strips. In Malta, for example, they’re described as “a succulent chicken breast, rolled into a crispy batter and fried to golden perfection, together with a sauce of your choice.”
