DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Unity Christian High School is set to promote from within to fill its head boys basketball coach position. This transition follows Felipe Phillips’s recent move to take on the coaching role at Mt. Zion.
The newly appointed head coach brings nearly 20 years of experience from various assistant coaching roles throughout the Decatur area. This position marks his first as a head coach.
In describing his approach to coaching, he shared the following insights:
“I bring energy, excitement, and a set of high expectations to my coaching style,” said Phillips. “While I am demanding, I aim to be known as a player’s coach. My focus is on ensuring the kids enjoy the game while developing respect for and understanding what is expected of them. Once they gain confidence, everything else tends to fall into place. The intricacies of the game—those are my responsibility.”
Unity Christian’s Lions team is riding high from a historic 2025-26 season, where they advanced to a sectional game for the very first time, achieving an impressive 31-4 record.
He also played college basketball for two years at Wabash Valley, where he earned NJCAA All-American honors, followed by two seasons at Wichita State.
