INVERNESS, Fla. (WFLA) — After a mobile home burned down Friday afternoon Citrus County Fire Rescue is urging residents to exercise caution with space heaters.

Around 1:30 p.m., crews responded to the mobile home on North East Avenue in Inverness that was already 80% engulfed in flames.

By the fire operations concluded around 2:46 p.m., the home was deemed a complete loss.

According to fire crews, a resident said she left a space heater running in the living room, while she went to visit her mother nearby. When she came back, she found flames and smoke in her home.

The woman said she tried to open the front door to let her dogs out and had stepped away from the burning home. With the help of firefighters, she was able to salvage essential items before it was unsafe to be in the home.

There were no reported injuries.

Fire rescue said the Red Cross was contacted to assist the displaced resident and provide temporary shelter and recovery needs.

Officials urge residents to be cautious with space heaters and other heating devices as the Tampa Bay area experiences chilly weather this week. Heaters should be at least three feet away from combustible materials and should not be left unattended, while smoke detectors should be installed and working.
