In Montgomery County, Illinois, the local Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has urged residents to refrain from open burning after a recent spike in uncontrolled fires in the area.
According to a Facebook announcement by the Montgomery County EMA, fire crews have been dispatched to tackle several fires involving grasslands, timber, fields, and other types of vegetation.
“The current combination of low humidity, windy weather, and dry conditions creates a perfect storm for controlled burns to become uncontrollable,” stated Dan Hough, the director of the EMA. “We are urging everyone to cease all open burning activities in Montgomery County.”
Hough also mentioned that the National Weather Service forecasts rain in the coming days, which could alleviate the current dry spell.
“We are optimistic that these weather changes will soon improve the dry conditions. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Once again, please halt any burning activities!” Hough added.
