SAVANNAH, Ga. — In Savannah, local mothers who depend on SNAP benefits to nourish their families are expressing deep concerns about the possibility of these essential resources coming to an end.

“Everyone deserves access to food, irrespective of their economic situation,” one mother passionately stated.

The recent news surrounding the potential halt of SNAP benefits has left these mothers feeling shocked and uncertain. They rely heavily on this assistance to feed their families.

“Honestly, I’m at a loss,” another mother admitted. “As a mom, you have to take things one day at a time, but with the SNAP benefits in jeopardy, I’m left wondering how I’m supposed to manage.”

One mother conveyed her initial hesitation about applying for SNAP, questioning whether she should have sought the aid. However, her inability to work due to a disability left her with little choice, and now she is anxious about coping without this support.

“I was 24 pregnant and I didn’t think I belonged on it, but I didn’t have a job,” a mother said. “I didn’t have anything, and I couldn’t get a job because I have a mental disability. It’s very hard for me.”

Another mother spoke to has three kids including one with autism. She said she wouldn’t be able to fulfill their needs without SNAP.

“I think that my daughter deserves to be fed, that all the children deserve to be fed,” a mother said. “It’s not just adults that are on these SNAP benefits. There are children.  There are disabled people. Everyone deserves to be fed, no matter your place in this economy. “
