ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A man was detained over the weekend after a 4-year-old boy was hospitalized in the wake of a local shootout last month, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
In an affidavit, deputies said they responded to 454 N. Park Ave. after receiving reports about the 4-year-old who’d been shot in the chest on Aug. 19.
Upon arrival, first responders airlifted the child to the hospital, where it was discovered that there was shrapnel lodged in his chest, the affidavit states.
As part of the investigation, detectives said they found out that the boy’s father had wanted to speak with the boy’s mother “about her boyfriend physically abusing his son.”

At the time, the father’s family was parked near the mother’s house as the father tried to speak with the mother outside her home as she was preparing to leave in her car, a witness recounted.
But during the encounter, the boyfriend — identified as Rey Rodriguez Campos, 28, who was sitting in the passenger seat — reportedly pulled a handgun out the window and aimed it backward, investigators added.
Witnesses claimed that Campos fired once, causing one of the father’s family members to come out and return fire, the affidavit says.
Deputies said that surveillance footage shows the mother’s car driving off from the scene, though it was revealed that the 4-year-old boy was in the back seat of the vehicle.
“There was no evidence of a gunshot entry from the rear of the vehicle, where (the family member) stated he shot from,” the affidavit reads. “The rear window was intact, and there was (sic) no bullet holes or strike marks on the rear of the vehicle.”
As a result of the incident, Campos was taken into custody on Saturday.
Campos now faces charges of attempted manslaughter with a firearm, aggravated assault with a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is held without bond.
