Motorist surrenders after collision that resulted in the death of a cyclist in Orange County as reported by troopers.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A 45-year-old Orlando man riding a bicycle in Orange County was struck by a van Friday night and later died, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 11:50 p.m. on Apopka Vineland Road, approaching A D Mims Road, as the bicyclist traveled northbound in the bicycle lane, troopers said.

According to an FHP crash report, a 65-year-old Orlando man driving a van northbound on Apopka Vineland Road veered into the bike lane and struck the bicyclist before continuing north.

The bicyclist was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, troopers said.

The van’s driver later turned himself in at the Apopka Police Department, where he advised he may have hit something in the area, the report states. He was being interviewed at the time of this report, troopers said.

FHP is still investigating.
