
A worrying outbreak of the cyclospora parasite is challenging nearly 7,000 Americans, bringing with it a wave of severe gastrointestinal symptoms. Despite a surge in diagnoses since May, health officials remain in the dark about the origin of the parasite.
Identifying cyclospora, a notorious foodborne pathogen, poses significant challenges due to its slow incubation period, as explained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Symptoms of cyclosporiasis such as abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and explosive, watery diarrhea can manifest anywhere from days to two weeks after exposure, complicating tracing efforts.
This delayed onset makes it exceedingly difficult for health authorities to pinpoint the parasite’s source. Many affected individuals often struggle to recall their meals from weeks past, while others with milder symptoms might skip medical consultations and testing altogether, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
Consequently, the CDC finds it challenging to maintain an accurate case count within the U.S. The situation sharply contrasts with last year, when only 249 cases had been reported nationwide by this time.
While the Food and Drug Administration is actively tracing food along supply chains to identify the source, Michigan health officials announced Monday that it could be lettuce and salad greens. The possible source was identified after state health detectives interviewed more than 1,000 people who tested positive for cyclosporiasis. There is still no specific type of produce, grower or supplier identified as the source.
However, with so many cases now being reported, health officials believe this will help identify shared foods, shopping habits and restaurant visits, ultimately leading to the source.
Until the source is found, the CDC recommends taking the following steps to reduce the risk of exposure:
- If cooking raw foods, make sure they reach 158°F or higher to kill cyclospora parasites.
