NEOGA, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Neoga is still recovering following a tornado last Friday. As the community continues to clean up, students are asking for help rebuilding one of the largest school programs.
“Seeing the Ag room destroyed in that, and it just wasn’t a good sight to see,” said junior student Dane McKinney.
In the aftermath of a weekend tornado, Neoga FFA students are looking for help. Beyond damaging the school, the storm also destroyed Neoga’s Ag shop, wood shop and noticeably, their greenhouse.
“All the plants and potting soil and pots that we had in there, they’re all about,” said senior Macy Moran. “We can’t salvage any of them just because our greenhouse sustained quite a bit of damage.”
On Wednesday, alumni with the Neoga FFA Booster Club set up a GoFundMe to help accelerate the program’s restoration. Donations will help replace students’ lost personal items like blue jackets and completed projects, and some of the program’s lost revenue they usually get in sign creation and plant sales at their greenhouse.
“Everything that we need for our chapter banquet, in different cities that we’re attending, like livestock judging and public speaking, the supplies that we need for those, we just aren’t able to get,” Moran said. “So, we’re going to have to buy all new ones to be able to get through our fourth quarter here.”
For seniors like Morgan and Audrey Kepp, it’s a chance for the final semester of school to gain back some normalcy.
“Kind of in hopes to be able to finish out the fourth quarter for our FFA members and our Ag students just to kind of normalize as much as we can [with] what’s all going on,” Moran said.
“FFA plays a huge role in not only the seniors’ school lives but also all the other students,” Kepp said. “I mean, it’s super important to us that we get some funds back and our chapter just picks up right where we left off.”
And for McKinney, a chance to rebuild the program for younger students.
“This fundraiser should help our Ag program in the next year, and hopefully, we have a new program next year for our senior class,” McKinney said. “I’m looking forward to my senior year, I love FFA.”
