New Illinois Law Enhances Protections for Missing Individuals with Developmental Disabilities Starting January

ILLINOIS (WCIA) — As the new year approaches, a fresh law is set to enhance protections for individuals with developmental disabilities who go missing in Illinois.

Senate Bill 1548 introduces the Golden Search Awareness Program, a legislative effort spearheaded by State Senator Paul Faraci (D-Champaign). The initiative aims to equip law enforcement, families, and communities with the necessary resources to respond effectively in such critical situations.

In addition to this new measure, Illinois law enforcement will see an expansion in the State Police’s jurisdiction regarding internet-related child crime investigations.

This newly formed task force will work collaboratively with the existing Endangered Missing Person Advisory (EMPA) system.

“While Illinois currently utilizes AMBER Alerts, EMPA Alerts, and Silver Alerts, there is a crucial need for a specialized alert system tailored to vulnerable populations,” Faraci explained. “The Golden Search Awareness Program will establish a definitive protocol to alert both the public and police when at-risk individuals in Illinois go missing, particularly those who may not fully comprehend their situation or who face communication challenges.”
