LAKE MARY, Fla. – A baby’s footprints taken in the hospital are one of their first forms of identification.

Today, they’re much more than a family keepsake thanks to technology.

An updated process is making baby’s first footprints easier to make, keep track of, and utilize in case of emergency.

News 6 anchor Bridgett Ellison went to the New Orlando Health Lake Mary Center for Women and Babies to check out this different type of “digital footprint.”

“He’s full of personality and he’s gonna let you know he’s here,” Daniece Bibbins said about her new baby.

The Bibbins family just welcomed their second child, Amir. Mom, Daniece, says her experience in the new hospital was fantastic and she was impressed with the new digital footprint system for baby’s footprints.

“I think it’s very convenient to have and I think it is very important to have the footprints and I know they also took a picture of him as well, his face, so just being able to have all of that information, you’re able to access it quickly, I think, is just amazing within itself,” Bibbins said.

The system by Certascan saves both time and space for busy hospitals, while also connecting families to resources they need in case of certain types of emergencies.

“We couple the footprint along with mom’s fingerprint as well as an image of the baby’s face. So those three linked together can add that extra layer of identification for the baby,” said Rose Palmer, director of Women’s Services.

Bibbins says having the footprints accessible online will really help out.

“And it’s right there. Instead of having to go look for, how we can be sometimes as moms, having to pull out everything, keep everything here and there, but it’s there for you to easily access,” she said.

The digital system has been around several years now, but the roll out is still ongoing at individual hospitals across the country.

Certascan’s CEO says the system is being used at six other hospitals across Central Florida.
