Newly Released Video and Images Highlight Person of Interest in Brown University Shooting Investigation

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Authorities have unveiled new visual evidence in their ongoing investigation into the fatal shooting at Brown University. Released on Monday, these images and video footage feature a person of interest linked to the tragic incident.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez stated that the images were taken approximately two hours prior to the shooting, which unfolded on campus on a Saturday afternoon. This evidence could prove pivotal in identifying the suspect responsible for the attack.

In addition to the initial images, Nexstar’s WPRI secured and verified another crucial piece of video evidence, which was subsequently shared by the police. This footage, dated at 4:06 p.m. on Saturday, corresponds closely with the timing of the gunfire.

The release of these videos underscores the urgency and intensity of the search for the individual who perpetrated the attack that resulted in the deaths of two students and left nine others wounded. The community remains tense as law enforcement continues its efforts to bring justice.

Attorney General Peter Neronha described the individual seen in the video as a person of “significant interest” to authorities as they search for a suspect in the crime.

Authorities also released new photos of the person of interest on Monday. They described the unknown suspect as a male with a “stocky build,” standing at approximately 5 feet, 8 inches.

Police in Rhode Island had previously released a video of a person of interest on Saturday, several hours after the shooting took place in the Barus and Holley building on Brown’s campus. But on Monday, investigators were going door to door on the east side of Providence, requesting any available camera footage from homes and businesses.

Worries over the state of the investigation, meanwhile, have been growing among locals in the Providence area. A lack of surveillance cameras on Brown’s campus is also leaving students frustrated at gaps in the university’s security and camera systems.

“The fact that we’re in such a surveillance state but that wasn’t used correctly at all is just so deeply frustrating,” said Li Ding, a student at the nearby Rhode Island School of Design who dances on a Brown University team.

Despite little video evidence, the Providence Police Department on Monday conveyed that at no point did their investigation stand down, even after officials appeared to have a breakthrough in the case, detaining a Wisconsin man who they now believe was not involved.

The FBI, too, announced a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the shooting.

“We are asking the public to be patient as we continue to run down every lead so we can give victims, survivors, their families and all of you the answers you deserve,” FBI Boston Special Agent in Charge Ted Docks told reporters.
