'No eureka moment': Locals react to U.S., Ukraine proposing 30-day ceasefire in war with Russia

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Ukraine said it will agree to a 30-day ceasefire in its war with Russia, but only if Russia accepts.

The plan was proposed by the Trump Administration following hours of negotiations between the U.S. and Ukraine while in Saudi Arabia.

The deal includes ending the war as soon as possible, humanitarian relief efforts, the exchange of prisoners of war, releasing civilian detainees, and developing Ukraine’s critical mineral resources.

“We’ll take this offer now to the Russians, and we hope that they’ll say yes, that they’ll say yes to peace. The ball is now in their court,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Local Ukrainian Sergiy Borysoz said he isn’t too hopeful about the deal.

“There is definitely no eureka moment for Ukrainians,” Borysoz said.

He offers psychological support for Ukrainians and said this was not just a war between two armies.

“We’re not going to have veterans who have PTSD, we have a whole country of PTSD,” Borysoz said. “They’re raped still, they have no food, it’s a horrible condition. So if someone wants to draw line and get a ceasefire, let’s stop thinking about mineral resources and land, and let’s start thinking about the other side.”

He believes the deal is a late step toward peace and argues there is another element to the conflict.

“I think Ukraine being shown the real face of the world, that the world is going to wait until its advantageous for the world to end the war,” Borysoz said. “People would just wait until Ukraine is really defeated, and depleted, and bloodless, and then deals would start to pop up.”

Rubio spoke to the severity of the situation, saying the president believes the only way to end the war was to negotiate out of it.

“What’s back on track here, hopefully, is peace. That’s what matters the most,” Rubio said. “I know everyone’s looking for who likes —this is, this is serious stuff. OK, we’re not, this is not mean girls. This is not some episode of some television show. This is very serious. People are going to today; people will die in this war. They died yesterday, and sadly, unless there’s a ceasefire tonight, they’ll die tomorrow. The president wants that to stop.”

They hope Russia will agree to the terms, but it’s unclear when we may learn their decision.
