NEW ORLEANS, La. () — Savannah native Nolan Smith Jr. is a Super Bowl champion after the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX in dominant fashion, 40-22, at the Caesars Superdome on Feb. 9.
The victory marks Philadelphia’s second Super Bowl victory since the franchise was established in 1933. The first was in 2018.
Savannah native and former Georgia Bulldog Linebacker Smith has been a huge part of the Eagles’ success this postseason. Smith, in his second season for the Eagles, recorded four sacks in Philadelphia’s four postseason games.
The Eagles came out incredibly strong against the back-to-back Super Bowl champions. The Birds jumped out to a 24-0 lead at halftime.
Three different players found the endzone for Philadelphia in the first half: Jalen Hurts on a one-yard rush, A.J. Brown on a 12-yard reception, and rookie cornerback Cooper Dejean on a 38-yard interception return.
The Eagles’ defense played exceptional in the first half, only allowing the Chiefs and three-time MVP Patrick Mahomes to 23 total yards through the first two quarters.
The Eagles kept their foot on the gas in the second half, and came out on top.
Smith finished with two hits on the quarterback.
Smith joins an elite club of players who have won a national championship and a Super Bowl.
