MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — A man from the United Kingdom was arrested in Miami Beach on Friday for six counts of voting illegally, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

James Ross Wightman, 65, a British National, was arrested for voter fraud following a multi-agency investigation, including FDLE’s Election Crime Unit, the Department of Homeland Security, and ICE.

“In Florida, we uphold the rule of law in our elections,” FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass said. “Thanks to the leadership of Governor DeSantis, anyone who seeks to illegally cast their ballot will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

According to the FDLE, Wightman was voluntarily deported from the U.S. back in 1989 following a drug offense in Hawaii and overstayed his Visitor Visa. He returned to the States, falsely affirming being a citizen on a voter registration form he submitted in November 2000.

In 2013, Wightman gave the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle a false Ohio birth certification to try to renew his Florida driver’s license.

The FDLE said he used this certification to illegally vote in six local and national elections in 2022, 2023, and 2024.

“Florida leads the nation in election security, and we continue to aggressively enforce our laws to stop non-citizens from voting,” Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd said. “Under the leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis, The Florida Department of State Office of Election Crimes and Security swiftly reviews allegations of fraud working with FDLE and law enforcement to ensure Florida laws are followed.”

Wightman was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
