In Polk County, Florida, a fatal plane crash is currently under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) alongside the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The incident, which occurred on Monday night, has drawn significant attention from authorities.
Sheriff Grady Judd reported that the crash involved a single-seat aircraft that tragically claimed the life of one individual. The plane went down near Moore Road, marking a somber evening for the victim’s loved ones. “This is a heartbreaking night for the young man, his family, and friends,” Sheriff Judd remarked.
The sheriff provided further details, explaining that the victim had departed from Bartow, while a friend took off from Lakeland in a separate aircraft. The two pilots intended to perform formation flying over the scenic rural landscape of the county. “It’s a beautiful area, and it was a gorgeous afternoon for such an activity, but it ended in a devastating tragedy,” Sheriff Judd stated.
According to the sheriff, the victim took off from Bartow, his friend left from Lakeland in a separate aircraft, and then the two headed to fly formations over a rural area in the county.
“It’s beautiful countryside, it was a beautiful afternoon to do that, unfortunately, it ended in horrible tragedy,” Judd said.
Investigators said the dispatch center received a 911 call about the incident around 8 p.m., when one of the pilots said the other aircraft went down approximately 1 mile west of Moore Road.
“He saw the plane come apart, or a piece come off the plane, and it immediately dropped straight down between the pine trees,” Judd said. “It is an experimental aircraft, and that’s how it’s classified.”
As of Monday night, PCSO was notifying the victim’s next of kin. The sheriff’s office will handle the death investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Authority will investigate the cause of the crash.
