NTSB Points to Engine Fire as Likely Cause of Fatal Clearwater...

A tragic plane crash that occurred in 2024, claiming the lives of the pilot and two individuals at a mobile home park in Clearwater, Florida, was likely caused by an engine fire, as detailed in a recent report.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released its findings on Tuesday, highlighting how the engine fire impeded pilot Jemin Patel’s ability to see the runway at Clearwater airport. This lack of visibility, as investigators noted, exacerbated the emergency situation and played a critical role in the crash’s outcome.

In a related news update, an armed suspect was killed following a SWAT standoff in Pinellas Park.

At the time of the incident, Patel was attempting to land his Beech V35B aircraft at the Clearwater Executive Airport. He informed air traffic control of the engine fire and requested that the runway lights be set to their highest intensity, as per the NTSB report.

Despite these efforts, Patel was still unable to locate the runway and consequently decided to divert his flight to the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport. Tragically, he never reached this alternate destination. His final radio communication with air traffic control revealed his dire situation, stating, “I’m losing engine.”

The NTSB said the “steep descent immediately before impact was the pilot’s likely response to the in-flight engine compartment fire and his initiation of an emergency descent.”

Investigators recovered the “extensively heat-damaged” wreckage scattered across the mobile home park. Through further examination, the NTSB was able to determine how the fire might have started.

“Based on the severity of the observed thermal damage in the area of the throttle body and metering valve, the most likely fire scenario for the accident airplane was an in-flight fire occurring due to ignition of fuel leaking from the slightly loose fuel hose at the outlet of the fuel metering valve,” the report said.

That loose hose may have been the result of “incorrect service/maintenance,” according to the NTSB.

Investigators also found that Patel likely “did not promptly turn off the fuel selector in accordance with the ‘Engine Fire in Flight’ checklist after recognizing and reporting a fire on the destination airport’s CTAF.”

“Had the pilot promptly secured the fuel selector valve and in conjunction with the steep descent, it is possible that the extent of the in-flight fire could have been mitigated,” the NTSB’s report said.

The NTSB also noted that Patel likely could have landed the plane in time had he been able to see the runway. According to officials, Patel had never been to the Clearwater airport before and other pilots, at the time, had mentioned it could be hard to find.

The crash has since sparked talks of future safety improvements at the airport, including adding extra light to help pilots see.
