THOMSON, Ga () – Thomson Housing Authority holding a Back to School Bash.
Dozens in Thomson are excited for the school year to start and to get some school supplies.
Don Cummings with Sweetwater Baptist Church and Chad Widener with Faith Baptist Church worked for 6 months to put the event together.
They wanted to hold the Back to School Bash in Thomson because Cummings says there are already many resources for people in the Augusta/Richmond County area but not many in other places.
“When you get farther out in the rural communities, you don’t see a lot of this, and we thought why did this need to be limited to the larger city and to the people centralized there. There are just as many folks in need, just as many people that need to know that they’re loved and cared for. It’s a big deal for us to be able to do this in our community,” said Don Cummings, Chairman & Founder of Sons of Consolation Ministries.
They prepared 400 backpacks and hope to give them all away.
At the event they had clothes, food, shoes and some games for people to enjoy.
Widener says its special to see the community be able to come together and support one another.
“There’s so much division in the world and in our communities. One of our hearts desire is to have that unification in the churches and the communities all together,” said Chad Widener, Pastor at Faith Baptist Church.
Cummings says putting the event together was a lot of hard work but to see it all come together and see people having fun is all worth it.
“There is at least 5 churches represented here and 15 or 20 different civic organizations and other organizations out here. It’s good to see our community as a whole represented and the churches all come together for one unified effort,” Cummings said.
If you were not able to make it the East Georgia Housing Authority Partners will be posting on their Facebook if there are any school supplies left.
