WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A tragic incident unfolded in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday when two National Guard members sustained critical injuries following a shooting, according to official reports.

Just before 3 p.m., the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) provided an update confirming that the situation around I Street and Connecticut Avenue NW had been brought under control, with one suspect apprehended.

The MPD revealed that the shooting occurred directly in front of a Metro station in the area, adding to the urgency and concern surrounding the event.

In a social media post shortly after 3:40 p.m., West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey disclosed that the injured individuals were members of the West Virginia National Guard, underscoring the impact of this violent episode on the community.

Morrisey initially said that both members had died from their injuries, but in an update shortly afterwards, said that he was “receiving conflicting reports” about the members’ condition.

“Our entire state grieves with their families, their loved ones, and the Guard community. West Virginia will never forget their service or their sacrifice, and we will demand full accountability for this horrific act,” Morrisey’s statement said.

The Associated Press (AP) reported that the shooting took place near the White House.

FBI Director Kash Patel, MPD Executive Assistant Chief Jeff Carroll and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser delivered a joint statement Wednesday afternoon after the shooting.

During the update, Carroll said that around 2:15 p.m., members of the National Guard were on “high visibility patrols” in the area when a suspect fired a weapon at the National Guard members.

Carroll said that other National Guard members were able to bring the individual, who MPD believes was a lone gunman, into custody.

MPD said that the two members who were shot and the suspect were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The suspect was shot, but authorities were still investigating who shot the suspect.

“We have assembled the full force of both the federal and state and local law enforcement agencies to bring… all of our resources to make sure we find the perpetrators responsible for this heinous act. And make no mistake, they will be brought to justice,” Patel said during the update.

Just after 3:20 p.m., President Donald Trump made a post on Truth Social regarding the shooting.

The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price. God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!

Statement from President Donald Trump

AP reported that Trump was at his West Palm Beach golf course at the time of the shooting.

The FBI’s Washington Field Office said it will be working with local and federal authorities to investigate the shooting.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
