ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A medical incident may have played a role in a crash that sent a vehicle into a daycare on Pine Hills Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
In a preliminary report, investigators said they believe the 79-year-old driver experienced a medical event. FHP is also reviewing whether the driver should undergo re-examination, a process used to determine if someone remains eligible to hold a valid driver’s license.
The report states that the driver was traveling south on Pine Hills Road when the vehicle crossed the northbound lanes and struck the daycare.
Four children and one adult were inside the daycare at the time of the crash, FHP said. All four children were younger than 5. A 4-year-old boy suffered minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital. Three other children were hospitalized, and two have since been released.
Orlando Health confirmed that one child remains hospitalized in good condition.
By Thursday, the daycare building had been boarded up. County stickers posted outside said the structure was condemned and deemed unsafe. A van was parked in front of the building to keep people from entering.
FHP said both adults involved in the crash have been released from the hospital. Investigators expect the complete crash report to be available in approximately nine days.
