ORLANDO, Fla. – A man arrested last week in Orlando is accused of stealing someone’s gun and using it to carjack them, according to police.

Christopher De Jesus Baez, 29, faces charges of carjacking with a firearm, attempted second-degree murder with a weapon, aggravated assault with a firearm, grand theft of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, records show.

According to Baez’s arrest affidavit, he had been spending some time with the victim on July 31 before the incident took place. The victim had picked up Baez — both of them riding around in the 2023 Kia Forte that police say Baez later tried to steal — going on to pick up and drop off other friends for several hours before the pair would up alone in the rear parking lot of a Walmart along S. Semoran Boulevard that night, the affidavit states.

The victim accessed the trunk while Baez had stepped away, yet when the victim returned to the driver’s seat, he saw that Baez was pointing a gun at him, according to the affidavit.

Baez chambered a round and fired a shot into the passenger-side A/C vent after the victim told him to stop joking, police said, adding the victim also realized around then that it was his gun Baez was holding.

Now fearing for his life, the victim complied with Baez’s demands for his money and his phone, the affidavit states. Baez then climbed into the driver’s seat of the Kia, rolled the window down, fired a second shot at the victim — missing him — and drove away southbound, police said.

The victim ran to a nearby 7-Eleven to call police, according to the affidavit.

Video shared to social media shows Orlando officers respond to the call and track down Baez, who was arrested at the Baldwin Meadows apartment complex along Old Cheney Highway, the affidavit states.

Baez was being held on no bond at the time of this report.

On July 31, just before midnight, officers responded to an armed carjacking near Lake Margaret Dr. and Dixie Belle Dr.

The suspect, later identified as 29-year-old Christopher De Jesus Baez, took the victim’s gun and forced him out of the car at gunpoint. Baez fired one round… pic.twitter.com/qEWwKw1KnU
