KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Osceola County district officials say they are in a good spot with teachers and are chipping away at bus driver shortage.

The first day of school is here, and Superintendent Dr. Mark Shanoff said the district is ready.

“So, this is going to be a great year for us, I can tell,” he said. “I think the most important thing is that this is the best position we’ve ever been in, as it relates to making sure that all of our classes have certified teachers. This is the best position we’ve been in relative to transfer. And we really have so much momentum going on right now.”

Getting students to the classroom is essential, and hundreds of buses hit the road daily to transport students across the district.

“We have 281 bus routes planned for this year. Our student enrollment has increased a little bit. Our total count of routes is increased by about 26,” Director of Transportation Randy Wheeler said.

Currently, the district is down about a dozen drivers but is managing by combining some routes, having drivers pick up extra students when it’s safe and making extra trips.

“So, we’re in a good place at 12,” Wheeler said. “But as we speak, all the bus routes are covered this morning. Now, that’s not to say they will be absolutely on time, but all the routes are covered.”

To help parents stay informed, the district has rolled out a new way to track school buses in real time. The “MyReaXium” app allows parents to see when their child scans on and off the bus using their school ID.

“We always want to make sure that our families know where their students are at,” said Heather Kahoun, chair of the Osceola County School Board.

Parents can download the app on their smartphones but need an invitation to sign up.
