According to a review by Reuters, over 400 federal judges have determined that Immigration and Customs Enforcement unlawfully detained immigrants in at least 4,421 instances since October.
These judicial decisions nationwide challenge the measures taken during the Trump administration’s sweeping deportation efforts, which have led to the indefinite detention of thousands, often without the opportunity for bail.
Reuters reports that under Trump’s presidency, the number of individuals held by ICE surged to approximately 68,000 this month, marking a 75% increase since he assumed office the previous year.
Judges across the political spectrum, appointed by both Republican and Democratic administrations, have criticized these detentions. Some have even held the Department of Justice in contempt for defying court orders related to detention challenges, such as failing to meet deadlines for bond hearings.
