In a development stirring concern among pet owners, Mars Petcare has issued a recall for specific lots of its Pedigree canned wet dog food. The company revealed that certain cans, which were intended to be discarded, inadvertently made their way into stores and may contain perilous fragments of metal and plastic.
This recall is specifically targeting the 13.2-ounce cans of Pedigree Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor, marked with the lot codes 613C3KKCFC and 613C1KKCFC.
Mars said the two lots had failed the company’s quality checks and were sent to be destroyed. Mars later learned that didn’t happen, and the cans were instead sold to consumers across the country.
The company said it’s working with authorities to figure out how that happened.
Mars said the affected cans could contain sharp metal and plastic fragments, which could hurt a dog if swallowed. As of the announcement on July 2, Mars hadn’t received any reports of dogs getting sick or hurt from the recalled cans.
If a dog has eaten the affected products already, they should be monitored for vomiting, loss of appetite, drooling, trouble swallowing or unusual lethargy.
No other Pedigree or Mars Petcare products are included in the recall.
