Pillsbury Project Progress: Smiley Face Transformation Begins After Silver Coating Removal

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Efforts to dismantle the long-standing Pillsbury plant in Springfield are steadily moving forward.

In an update circulated on Tuesday, Team Pillsbury announced significant developments at the location. The final layer of silver coating on the Headhouse was stripped away on Wednesday. Anticipated for next week, the iconic smiley face that crowns the 180-foot Turbo Building is set to be removed, with a crane poised to bring down the plant’s structure.

For context, Moving Pillsbury Forward had earlier unveiled the demolition strategy for this Springfield site.

Team Pillsbury also reported that the environmental cleanup of the site’s structure is on track to finish in the coming week. The asbestos removal process, which began in March 2025, has made significant strides over the past eight months, bringing the site close to being fully cleared.

By July, both the manufacturing and warehouse sections had been freed from asbestos. Efforts to eliminate the silver coating, containing about 5% asbestos, from the silos and Headhouse have been underway since March.

Team Pillsbury said the 10-story Turbo Building with the south facing smiley face was also expected to be removed Wednesday morning. But, officials told WCIA that it had been delayed.

Earlier this year, the 160-foot smokestack came down in mid-September, followed by the 96,000-square foot five-story Grocery Building and the 24,000-square foot nine-story Bulk Storage Building. For more information on Move Pillsbury Forward, click here.
