DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Decatur Police arrested three people that they say shot a woman while breaking into her home earlier this week.
WCIA previously reported that Decatur Police responded early Monday morning to a shooting at Stone and Whitmer Streets; as they were on the scene, a 22-year-old woman arrived at St. Mary’s Hospital with a gunshot wound. Looking into the shooting, investigators were able to determine what happened leading up to the woman being hurt.
They said she was at home with her children when armed individuals broke in. Armed with a gun of her own, the woman announced her presence, which caused the suspects to fire upon her. She returned fire, police said, and one of the suspects was shot.
The woman’s children were not physically harmed during the break-in.
Police added that two hours later, officers responded to a home in the area of North and Calhoun Streets and found a 24-year-old man with a non-life-threatening gunshot to the lower back. Investigators then determined that the 24-year-old, identified as Deonte Stone, was one of the suspects in the earlier home invasion.
Probable cause was established to arrest Stone and two others for the Stone Street shooting — the other two are 25-year-old Colton Clark and an unnamed 16-year-old. The teenager and Clark are both facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and home invasion. Stone is also charged with home invasion.
The investigation into the shooting remains active. Anyone who has further information is asked to contact the department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 217-424-2734 or Macon County Crime Stoppers at 217-423-8477.
