COCOA, Fla. – The Cocoa Police Department said Thursday that a suspect was in custody following a “disturbance call,” according to the agency’s social media.

There was police activity for several hours in the area of Jackson and Polaris streets before the scene was cleared around 1:30 p.m., the post states.

During a news conference, Cocoa police Chief Evander Collier said the department received a call around 8 a.m. about a domestic violence case where a nephew and an uncle were having a feud about a home.

“It’s a home that they actually all live in together and it appears that our potential suspect pointed a shotgun at his uncle, and so it’s all about a feud about this house, so we’re just really trying to get down to the bottom of it,” he said.

Police said the suspect barricaded himself inside the home before he was safety taken into custody after 5 hours of negotiations.

The suspect — Charles Johnard Hopkins, 51 — faces charges of “aggravated assault with a deadly weapon/domestic violence” and will be booked without bond at the Brevard County jail, according to a news release from the city.
