URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Two men were arrested this month in Urbana after police said they were caught with firearms despite being felons.
One of the arrests happened on July 3, but it wasn’t announced until Monday. This arrest occurred during a traffic stop of a “suspicious vehicle” at Hunter Street and Lierman Avenue. The Urbana Police Department said that officers found open alcohol in the car and a firearm under the driver’s seat.
The driver, identified by Urbana Police as a 26-year-old Urbana man, was a convicted felon. He was arrested for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm. In addition, the driver was arrested on two outstanding warrants and received tickets for driving with an open container of alcohol and driving on a suspended license.
The second arrest happened around 1:21 a.m. on Monday, July 21, after officials said officers took a report of a man waving a gun on Hill Street. When they responded, Urbana officers and Champaign County Sheriff’s deputies found a suspect and detained him. They found a firearm partially concealed beneath him.
The suspect, a 45-year-old Urbana man who is also a convicted felon, was formally placed under arrest and was booked into jail. Urbana Police officials did not specify the charges he is facing.
Officials did not identify either person arrested by name.
